WHAT IS A CONTENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR THE WEB?

CMS content management system

The content management system, also called the CMS (Content Management System) is intended for the design and dynamic updating of websites.

What is a content manager?

A Content Manager allows you to easily and quickly create dynamic and editorial content (text, images, videos, etc.) for a website. The content manager is present at all stages of creating web content, from validating a page or article to managing the publication rules.
The main feature of a web content management tool or CMS is to separate the content from the container. It is thus possible to update text or image content independently of the graphic structure of the website, and vice versa.
The articles and content produced are most often stored in a database and page models (templates) are used to define the presentation and layout of the content. The content manager organizes and classifies information, associating it with metadata (for example: title, author).
Content management therefore consists of quickly creating, managing and publishing pages and articles via a simplified administration interface (back-office) so that an editor without knowledge of html can be completely autonomous.

Where are content managers found?

There are many CMS on the market (Drupal, WordPress, Prestashop, Magento,…), both proprietary and Open Source solutions. Each CMS has been developed to create and maintain a specific type of website.

There are CMS developed and adapted in the following areas:

·         In E-commerce sites (order management, payment, delivery, product catalogs ...),
·         In all dynamic websites, brochure site, institutional site, showcase site (instant updates, interactivity with Internet users, etc.),
·         Photo galleries or portfolio (adding photos, category management, etc.),
·         In collaborative work platforms (intranet site, project or team management, etc.),
·         In private or public forums (access management, categories and subjects, etc.),
·         Blogs (easy publication, management of the publication chain, management of comments, etc.),
·         In community portals and social networks (downloading, group and rights management, etc.).

What are the advantages of a web content management system? The main benefits of content management are:

·         Efficient content management and organization,
·         A preserved graphic unit for the entire website,
·         Automatic generation of navigation menus and links,
·         User administration and separate roles,
·         A decentralization of content supply,
·         A publication chain with a validation circuit (workflow),
·         The ability to organize and schedule the production and publication of content.

In conclusion,

The use of a CMS is the preferred solution to supply a website with content, its only defect remains a certain slowness of access to databases noticeable in the display of pages on sites not optimized for the time of loading.
